Chris Motley: Garden Galaxy (detail), Felted and Sewn Fiber and Wool, $800
Necessity is the mother of invention, so it is said. After the shelter-in-place order forced us to close the gallery and cut short our first exhibition of 2020, we got inventive! With a stitch here and a stitch there we tailored up our first online exhibition: Spinning Yarns. You won't want to miss it!

We will be producing more online exhibitions in the coming weeks and months, so keep our Current Exhibition page bookmarked!

COVID-19 ANNOUNCEMENT & ACTIONS

3/19/2020

In accordance with the Order of the Health Officer of the City of Berkeley to cancel non-essential group events, to facilitate social distancing, and slow the spread of the Coronavirus (COVID-19), ACCI Gallery will temporarily close beginning today, March 16th until further notice.

Our workshop, Chain, Chain, Chain, Crochet with Mirto scheduled for Saturday, March 21st was cancelled. All upcoming events are postponed until further notice, including Waste Not Want Not: The Redemption of Trash and our Spring Garage Sale.

As we continue to monitor developments and regularly assess this temporary closure; the health and safety of our members, staff and collectors is our highest priority. We will be sharing important updates via email and on our social media accounts.

For more information about the latest COVID-19 guidelines, please visit the World Health Organization (WHO), Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Alameda County Public Health Department and City of Berkeley Public Health websites.

We also encourage everyone to follow these guidelines to reduce their risk of getting sick and prevent the spread of the virus to others:
  • Wash hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds
  • Cover your cough or sneeze
  • Stay home if you are sick
  • Avoid touching your face
  • Try alternatives to shaking hands, like an elbow bump or wave, or a simple kind nod of the head
  • If you have recently returned from a country, state or region with ongoing COVID-19 infections, monitor your health and follow the instructions by public health officials.

We are very grateful to our wonderful ACCI community and wish you all health and safety during these difficult and uncertain times.

Be safe, be well and Make Art!

Sincerely, ACCI Board of Directors

3/7: OPENING RECEPTION-Spinning Yarns

3/2/2020

Saturday, March 7: 6-8pm
Spinning a yarn. Weaving strands of story together with fiber has its beginnings in mythology, ancient history and literature.

Join us in celebrating the opening of Spinning Yarns: an exhibition about narrative and storytelling through the gossamer threads of fiber arts. This exhibition coincides with National Crochet Month in March.

Meet the curators and participating artists, and enjoy a glass of wine and refreshments.

Spinning Yarns: first exhibition of 2020

2/20/2020

Spinning a yarn. Weaving strands of story together with fiber has its beginnings in mythology, ancient history and literature.

There’s a tragic story from Ovid’s metamorphosis about two sisters. One, rendered unable to speak, weaves a garment for her sister in which she depicts her tragic tale. The perpetrator takes the garment to the other sister unaware that this is not just a piece of clothing but a message containing a story. Evil doings are discovered and justice is delivered.

Consider:
  • Arachne in competition with Athena—a goddess noted for her craft
  • Penelope in the Odyssey using the weaving of a shroud to fend off suitors
  • Irish fisherman’s sweaters are knit with a distinctive family pattern, not only to keep the fisherman safe but also to identify bodies in case of shipwreck
  • Madame La Farge in A Tale of Two Cities knitting the names of the “hit list” for the French revolution

We invite you to enjoy this unique exhibition of fiber art: 23 pieces which are not only visually beautiful and technically sound, but carry on the tradition of narratives that are poignant and powerful.

Opening Reception: Sat. March 7, 6-8pm
