Susanne Scher

Ceramics

I started playing with clay at 9 years old and had my first studio at 15. I was lucky enough to have a Japanese ceramics master for my high school ceramics teacher and he taught me to throw using a traditional Japanese approach. Under his tutelage, I was awarded a ceramics scholarship from the University of Southern California’s Isomata Arts Program, and I’ve been hooked on clay ever since!

I worked as a production potter while also working on my career as a Graphic Designer, Art Director and most recently as a User Experience Design Director for tech companies. Merging the two influences of design and ceramic art, I formed ZAN Ceramics and Zan Home Décor. I enjoy the ongoing debate between form and function with my architect husband and fellow artists, but I think my work reflects my bias towards creating more non-functional design pieces.

My approach to altering and disrupting the symmetry of a thrown piece is how I create movement in my pieces. I strive to translate the contrasts in form, texture and color into a clean, modern aesthetic.

I love the endless possibilities of working with clay because it is such a fluid material. I'm happiest when working in my beautiful studio under our redwood trees with my dogs for company. I live and work as a ceramic artist in San Mateo with my husband and a menagerie of cute, furry creatures.
