Alisa GoldenTextiles
As a printmaker, I’m interested in marks and traces of living beings and our connections to them. Exploring hand-stenciling and letterpress printing in textiles I look for metaphors to convey those lives, often a response to something I have seen or read. Sometimes the reading inspires a poem I include; writing is also part of my practice. Recently, I set out with the challenge of reworking materials I already have. Using hand-dyed cotton, linen, and velvet I piece together a kaleidoscope, exploring the essence of a single natural subject: ocean, forest, or the creatures within. Letterpress printed words from wood type suggest a mood or title. I begin with a color palette and watch how the quilt unfolds and grows as I work with it, often cutting it up multiple times. The world is messier than the traditional rectangle, so I have been exploring shaping the edges to match the subject, expanding the hard edges into organic forms. Having worked small, making books for more than thirty years, I find that textile work allows me to continue to pay attention to each small part, while at the same time enables me to work toward a physically larger whole.
