Artist Statement The art that I create is drawn from a collection of inspirations, these may be from a fragment of ugly antique linoleum, or a feeling from a vintage catalog. The idea of using or creating something that is not intended for its real function amuses me. I do this by either a play on textures and patterns, or creating and collecting everyday banal or kitchy objects, (antique!) and not using them for their intended purpose. I like to have a hint or a glimmer of historical reference by using advertising, stereotypes or product consumerism. We live in such a disposable-throw away society, that I feel the need to elevate these products into a different status. Looking at the time, care and thought involved in decorative arts from the past is inspiring. |
